The Choral Scholars is a vocal octet rapidly gaining acclaim in West Michigan. The idea for the group was sparked when three paid choral scholars and the organ scholar of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids sang as a quartet for a few services. These four gathered four of their most talented friends, and the group began singing together formally in 2005. They made their full-length concert debut that December as part of the St. Mark's Concert Series in Grand Rapids. Since then, they have returned to the St. Mark's Concert Series, participated in the Barker Series at Central Reformed Church, collaborated with the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Chorus, given several full concerts of their own around West Michigan, and have sung as the featured guests at a variety of other events around the area. Upcoming plans include a tour of the Chicago area, several church services, and a few other local functions. All eight members of The Choral Scholars are graduates of Calvin College who currently live and work in West Michigan. In addition to their participation in the Choral Scholars, the singers are members and/or directors of many other community musical ensembles including the Calvin College Alumni Choir, the West Shore Symphony Orchestra, and several church and school choirs in Grand Rapids, Hudsonville, Holland, Grand Haven, and Muskegon. The group released its first full-length recording in November 2007, entitled "Gaudeamus". CDs are available at concerts and by contacting the group through the website.
